Bangladesh Nationalist Party Pledges to Form New Government After Election Victory
“The government will be formed by Feb. 15. The BNP will go to parliament with all parties,” the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Friday while visiting his constituency in Thakurgaon, in northwestern Bangladesh.
Tarique Rahman, who assumed party leadership after the death of his mother and Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, Khaleda Zia, in December, is expected to be the BNP’s prime ministerial candidate.
“It will be the BNP’s government. And BNP will implement its election promises and manifesto, as well as the issues that BNP signed in the July Charter on reforms will be implemented step by step,” Alamgir added.
Alongside the general election, voters also approved a referendum on the “July Charter,” adopted last October, which proposes more than 80 reforms aimed at restructuring governance. Key measures include term limits for the prime minister, increased presidential powers, protections for judicial independence, expanded representation for women, and broader fundamental rights.
Under the Constitution, a party requires 151 seats in the 300-member parliament to form a government. The BNP and its allies secured 212 seats in Thursday’s vote, while the main opposition bloc led by Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats.
