White House Says Diplomacy Remains Trump’s “First Option” with Iran
Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt acknowledged that “there are many reasons and arguments that one could make for a strike against Iran,” referencing attacks the president ordered in June on nuclear facilities, which the administration says “totally obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program.
"The President has always been very clear, though, with respect to Iran or any country around the world, diplomacy is always his first option, and Iran would be very wise to make a deal with President Trump and with this administration. He's talking to many people, of course, his national security team first and foremost," she told reporters.
When asked if Trump is coordinating with Israel regarding potential strikes, Leavitt declined to provide details. "I don't have any specifics on the president's recent conversations with Israel," she said. Similarly, she avoided setting deadlines for an agreement with Iran, calling the question “fair” but stressing that she would not “set deadlines on behalf of the President of the United States."
The remarks followed a second round of indirect negotiations between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman, with both sides reporting progress amid an increasing American military presence in the region.
