Protests Erupt in Israel Over Lebanon War

(MENAFN) Hundreds of Israelis took to the streets Saturday, rallying against their government's ongoing military campaign in Lebanon and calling for an immediate halt to the conflict, a Hebrew newspaper reported.

Demonstrators converged on Haifa's Horev Junction, brandishing anti-government banners as they voiced opposition to the war. Parallel protests unfolded at the Karkur Junction in the Wadi Ara region, southeast of Haifa, drawing similarly large crowds.

The rallies reflect a deepening wave of domestic dissent over how the government has managed the conflict and its mounting consequences — yet public sentiment remains sharply divided. A poll released by Israeli media last week revealed that 77% of Israelis back continuing the offensive against Lebanon, while only 12% favor ending the fighting. An additional 11% expressed no view.

The demonstrations unfolded against the backdrop of a fragile 10-day ceasefire with Hezbollah that came into force at midnight local time Friday — one Israel has already been accused of breaching.

The Israeli army acknowledged Saturday that it had identified ceasefire violations by individuals in southern Lebanon over the prior 24 hours, confirming it launched multiple strikes and dismantled infrastructure in retaliation.

The human toll of the offensive, which Israel launched on March 2, has been severe. According to the latest official Lebanese figures, more than 2,294 people have been killed, 7,544 wounded, and over 1 million displaced since the campaign began.
