Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap – August 18, 2026
The Iredell County Board of Commissioners met for its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, addressing key school capital investments, public safety funding, board appointments, and operational updates across county departments.
Here are the top highlights from the August 18 session:
Approval of $20 Million Funding Allocation for Weathers Creek High School Phase 2
The Board voted 3-2 to approve a formal request from the Iredell-Statesville Schools (ISS) Board of Education for $20 million to complete Phase 2 (athletic facilities) of Weathers Creek High School. The approved package relies on $16.33 million transferred from capital projects reserve fund, $3.70 million appropriated from the future capital reserve fund balance (Budget Amendment #6), and roughly $4 million in ISS district-identified contributions and project scope savings outlined by Monteith Construction.
FY 2027 Fire Department Funding & Public Safety Allocations
Commissioners took formal action on Fiscal Year 2027 fire service funding by approving Budget Amendment #9. The approved plan funds half of the requested additional staffing requests for in-county departments, applies a 2% operational increase, provides targeted supplemental funding for the Lake Norman and South Iredell Volunteer Fire Departments, and holds out-of-county department appropriations flat.
Presentation of the 2025 State of the County’s Health (SOTCH) Report
The Health Department presented the 2025 State of the County’s Health (SOTCH) Report, providing commissioners and the public with key health statistics, highlighted ongoing progress on primary county health priorities, and outlined continuing community outreach and wellness initiatives across Iredell County.
Consent Agenda & Administrative Authorizations
The Board unanimously approved a series of routine operational and administrative requests, including:
- Budget Amendment No. 5 to transfer unspent FY26 funds within the Sheriff's Office budget into the Detention Center's inmate medical line item. The transfer addresses increased costs under a new healthcare provider contract and higher daily inmate counts. Commissioners expressed appreciation to Sheriff Darren Campbell for hosting a recent regional roundtable with state officials to advocate for state/federal reimbursement reform, lower Medicaid rates for inmates, and expanded long-term mental health facilities.
- Selecting Cree & Associates to provide professional architectural and engineering services for interior renovations at Government Center South.
- Budget Amendment No. 7 allocating capital funds and awarding a construction contract to SCS Field Services for Cell 6 gas expansion at the county landfill. The project adds 19 landfill gas wells to comply with EPA New Source Performance Standards (NSPS).
- Budget Amendment No. 4 accepting $14,283 in state grant funds (bringing total FY27 funding to $120,321) to support medical and dental professional services at the Iredell County Health Department.
- Declared three retired Ferno stair chairs from EMS as surplus and approved donating them to the Cleveland County Volunteer Fire Department for continued public safety use after local county departments fulfilled their needs.
- Authorized an upcoming public electronic auction for retired fleet vehicles expected to yield over $30,000 in total proceeds.
- Approved a four-year maintenance and service agreement for the library’s self-checkout kiosk system.
- Approved a five-year lighting service and lease agreement with Duke Energy for outdoor lighting improvements at the Iredell County Fairgrounds.
Public Input & Board Appointments
During the public comment period, residents and local leaders addressed the Board on volunteer fire funding mechanisms, ISS budget transparency, and high school athletic facility design scopes. The Board also made formal appointments to local advisory bodies, naming Nancy Keith to the Farmland Preservation Board and Tom Morris to the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC).
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 1, at the Iredell County Cooperative Extension Office.
