Sand pumping complete, demobilization underway following federal beach renourishment project

Sand pumping operations for the Grand Strand Renourishment Project are complete.

The emergency beach renourishment project, which began in December, wrapped up last weekend. While the dredge is no longer visible from the shoreline, crews are still working to remove equipment from some areas of Horry County.

The Calhoun Drive Beach Access will remain closed a little longer while crews complete this work. An additional closure is in place near 6th and 7th avenues North in Surfside Beach.

The contractor, hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, expects the demobilization process to be complete around the end of the month.

In the coming months, residents and visitors can expect to see the final phase of the project begin with the installation of sand fencing and dune signage, but that work will not require beach closures.

Thank you for your patience as crews work safely and efficiently to clear the remainder of our coastline.
