2,600 Rally in Berlin Demanding Merz Government Resign
The organizers, a group calling itself Project M1illion, presented a sweeping list of demands, according to a public broadcaster. They include the government’s resignation, a Swiss-style direct democracy, an end to healthcare reform, and the scrapping of public broadcasting fees and the carbon tax. They also want a realistic assessment of every aspect of Germany’s energy security.
Banners called for tougher immigration rules and closer ties with Russia. Many demonstrators carried German flags alongside peace flags.
The crowd chanted “Merz must go,” a reference to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and “We are the people.”
Placards carried messages including “Resignation: a small step for Merz, a giant leap for Germany,” “Merz is Ukraine’s chancellor and a chancellor who betrays his own people,” “Stop rearmament and arms supplies,” “Those with no knowledge want to rule us; that is why we are demonstrating,” “Peace with Russia,” “The government acts, we suffer,” and “This government is a disgrace to Germany.”
Police deployed hundreds of officers to secure the march and reported no major incidents.
Reform Drive Under Fire
The protest comes as public confidence in the chancellor’s agenda erodes. A survey published Thursday found most Germans believe Merz’s reform push is off course, and that the conservative leader’s personal standing has hit a low.
The poll, conducted for public broadcaster ZDF, showed 59% of respondents believe the coalition’s planned and partly enacted changes to pensions, health care and long-term care are heading in “the wrong direction.” Only 30% said the measures are on the right track.
